14. October 2016 - FLOATING BEYOND THE NORTHERN ARCTIC CIRCLE ON URAL 650

AHOY to the amazing crowd following and pushing us through the world!

This is a message for all who were worried this whole time if we have enough fairway under our keel!

Bild

Our 1700 km challenge on water was a great success: We are all alive and kicking and here to tell the story of occassionaly crashing into one sandbank or another. After much anticipation June finally led us back to Magadan where we got down to business with replicating our Vancouverite propeller prototype x4! Soon enough we were fully loaded with A LOT of steel, pontoons, propellers – not to mention a new waterproof wardrobe, a bedroom, a kitchen, a new tool collection for our mobile workshop. We met our doppelganger bikes which were all waiting for us in the Polar Owls garage and managed to screw them together into „roadworthy“ conditions.

Those 10 days in Magadan were full-time, over-time and hardcore and would not have been the same without the support of all the old friends and the new. Survival tips and contingency plans were coming in as compliments from all directions. ‘Удачи’ (russ .: ‘Good luck’) they wished us all while we tried to leave Magadan with our overloaded machines followed by an extensive line of local bikers. None of us was spared by the usual succession of the 650′s benevolent surprises. By the time we reach the border that leads out of Magadan the first piston had to be changed.

After an 800 km effort we finally reached the point where we had to stitch everything together in order to get floating. Excitment and anticipation were stirring up as we drove onto the Seymchan shores where the road opens up to the foot of the Kolyma river. The next few days were enough to turn this spot into our temporary shipyard. Each Ural had to be clasped to pontoons and the final drive replaced with the propeller. The can-saw, the axe and the hammer were consistently part of our fine-tuning and preparations. The mosquito nets were already at the foundations of our bedroom amid the bushes. The foodbarrels were lined up behind a log a few meters away (just in case of the bears …)

It is not long before the 1st Kolyma test swim a nd everyone is kind of freaking out: Nothing can really go wrong in principle – things have after all been tested on the Fraser river – but let’s put on a life jacket and take a paddle (just in case of…). June 23, 2016 , 15:00 pm is when the 4 Amphibious Urals take-off solo.

Bild

Every day on the Kolyma river comes with a new lesson:

‘Be wary of driving solo if you can’t go against the current!’

Kaupo and his „new“ Amphibious Ural „STACY“ get caught 20 minutes later into a floating tree which was headed for Seymchan. The rest of the floats could only watch from a distance as he tried to untangle himself from the careless water traveller. Minutes later we are tying all floats together and rely upon the „safety“ of: THE MEGAFLOAT. Most likely the fastest and wisest decision we made in order to avoid that each person ends up at the end of completely different river prongs.

So how do you control this vehicle as you navigate through the Kolyma labyrinth and how do you handle the float when there’s oncoming traffic? After 4 days of being regularly stopped by sandbanks and dismantled by crosscurrents we managed to set up a basic routine: taking off/landing, aligning with river marks, proposing and following hand signals and being more aware of our tools as the river swallows everything that falls.

We mostly drive late into the night and early mornings so on average we manage to cover a distance of 60 km per day. We get to experience ‘White Nights’ for the 1st time in our lives where the sun sets at midnight and just a couple of hours later returns to hang out with the moon. Night remains nearly as bright as day and washes the unreal Kolyma backdrop in a bizarre type of light. The water is clear. Left and right you find wide expanses of pebbled shores before the wooded hills and steep slopes layer up further back. From a distance we occassionaly witness the smoke of a forest fire and wonder if we will encounter it more closely along our way. Bear marks lay tracks on ground very often until we finally get to see the first real thing – luckily/unluckily from afar.

Bild

We take all types of weather in as we get to know both the subdued and more riotous sides of the Kolyma river. There are large water areas which are particularly vulnerable to wind and can quickly transform into a forbidding wave landscape. Our boat wavers in all directions, rears, will überspühlt and creaks like an old attic. In German they say that „A cow’s tail wobbles and does not drop“ and this thought probably keeps us sane and chin-up while driving full throttle through the storm. The goal is to reach land. All 4 machines are running full power as we necessarily need to ignore all possibilities of worry: waves drowning cylinder heads, running out of fuel, ropes holding us together snapping off, dropping vital bolts…Tearing through the fog we reach the shore and are received by a pack of angry looking dogs. Beyond the raging barks we are lucky to expect a hunter’s hut somewhere in the woods. These small wooden houses are scattered along the banks of the river and offer shelter and the prospect of banja to fishermen, hunters…and perhaps some bedraggled Amphibious Ural drivers…

Every second person here is a hunter and earns his money with the killing of deer, reindeer, bears and wolverines among other critters.

Bild

We have become familiar with the controlling the float relatively fast. There are always two machines driving simultaneously, while Johannes is at the very front, looking out on our navigation and outputting signals. Along with Martin they interpret the maps and guide us through swirls of islands and side arms. After the first 600 kilometers on the water we reach Zyryanka – a settlement of around 3000 inhabitants. In summer the village is accessible only by the river and air. Only in winter when the Kolyma freezes over an ice road is formed from Yakutsk to Zyryanka and further in the north. We are told that 15,000 people had lived here 20 years ago but after the collapse of the Soviet Union economic degradation and the restructuring within the Federation established a large wave of migration that continues to this day. Nevertheless there is the central heating plant which supplies the entire site with warm water and heating in winter. About 80,000 tons of coal are transported on the Kolyma over the summer and then burned during the winter.

The further north we get more aquainted with the idea that it is difficult to transport goods to this region. And of course we are happy about every spark plug we can organize. We scrape together wood and metal from abandoned huts and shipwrecks in order to render our float more stable. In Zyryanka our boat receives an extensive sun deck and a small oven for making tea and coffee while we float. From now on we can enjoy a stable space which provides us a „safer“ sleep on board.

Bild

The river becomes 4 km wide and time is running (as always). We put our heads together and decide to try and hitchhike a coal barge. Making it to Srednekolymsk brought us to Yura Yudin – a very officially self-introduced Kozak in military clothing who later introduces us to the coal barge discotheque and its 5 member crew. After repeatedly delegating on our behalf with the immigration police he introduces us to Symeon – the captain of the coal barge which is headed for Chersky. As our floats become hitchhikers they are lifted like string puppets by the coal barge crane onto the roof which will take them further.

Captain Symeon’s barge is like a big playground and we get the chance to study the map from the captain’s control room. Without feeling a wave under our bellies we make around 600 kilometers downstream in just 2 days. The last 150 km to the Anyuysk we are towed by 40 horsepower fishing boats. We have reached Chuktoka, the last corner of northeastern Russia. And here our tires touch dry shores. Adieu Kolyma!
