It was around the year 2000 with my second Donghai. We were driving to Austria to attend a bike rally in the Alps in
December. Which usually means a lot of snow to battle. The fun is to reach a lodge situated at a high ridge . With the help
of special off road tires with spikes in it, the Donghai made it, after more than an hour of digging the snow in the first gear.
She was the only chinese bike under a whole bunch of russian iron such as Ural's and Dnepr's.
On the way, somewhere in South Germany I suddenly couldn't switch gears anymore. We stopped in the middle of nowhere.
What to do ?
Open the gear box, what else. While unloading my luggage to retrieve my tools it started snowing. So we opened the
engine during a snow storm, to find that a lost pin. One of my friends produced a small magnet, to fish in the oil. We found
a lot of magnetic particled of all shapes and sizes, but also the missing pin, undamaged.
We inserted and secured it, closed the engine and up and away we were. The rest of the journey the Donghai behaved well.
Even starting under extreme cold conditions (-20°C) was not a problem.
